Report an RTC – Badger watch

Thank you for taking the time to report road traffic casualties (RTCs). By reporting badger road casualties you help us to track incident numbers, inform our ‘Give Badgers a Brake’ campaign and the monthly data is also provided by us to a specialist project being run at the University of Cardiff which quantifies and maps wildlife roadkill across the UK.

Advice on help for injured animals

If you’ve found an injured animal, call for help.

Many local badger groups have trained rescuers who can be called out in an emergency to an injured badger. Use the map on the Badger Trust Website, find your local group and call their emergency numbers.

Unless specifically asked to do so by an experienced rescuer, do not approach the badger but observe from a safe distance.

If the badger is on the road, carefully warn other road users but don’t put yourself at risk while doing so.

If the badger is caught in a snare or is injured in a trap, do not attempt to release it as it may need veterinary treatment. Do not attempt to handle the badger as it may cause you injury.

If your local badger group does not have an emergency number, or if you need help for an injured dog or other animal, call the RSPCA on 0300 1234999 or contact a local animal rescue.

Next steps

If at all possible, remain nearby so you can show rescuers to the location. If you are unable to stay, leave a marker (e.g. string tied to a tree) to help rescuers identify the location.

Suspicious circumstances?

If the injured animal was found in suspicious circumstances, and only after calling for help, go back to the home screen and select the relevant incident category.

Do you know if the badger is a lactating sow? *

Signs of lactation include enlarged or swollen teats, a circle of hair loss around teats from suckling, and/or presence of milk. Note: teat size and hair loss vary depending on the cub’s age. These signs should be looked for between January and June.

Badger Group Help (Lactating sows)

If the RTC you are reporting involves a lactating sow, you need to contact your local badger group for immediate help.

Lactating sows may have cubs nearby who are dependent on their mother to survive. Many local badger groups have members who are trained and may be able to locate dependent cubs. They will try to help, depending on the age of the cubs, this could include monitoring, rescue, or support feeding.
